Bolivia Birding Expeditions is a recently founded birdwatching company created by birders, for birders — which means we fully understand the specific needs and expectations of this specialized and demanding field. Although the company is new, our team brings many years of experience in birding, naturalist guiding, and nature tourism, both in Bolivia and internationally. We consider ourselves a bird- and birdwatcher-friendly company, focused on providing high-quality field experiences, reliable logistics, and responsible tourism.
Our mission is to connect birdwatchers from around the world with Bolivia’s extraordinary bird diversity through well-organized and sustainable expeditions that support ecosystem conservation and contribute to local communities and economies.
We are one of the operators with the broadest reach in Bolivia, accessing remote and less-explored regions in search of rare and localized species. We work across all of the country’s ecoregions and have extensive field knowledge of where to find Bolivia’s most sought-after birding specialties.
Hugo Santa Cruz
CEO and Lead Birding Guide, Bolivia Birding Expeditions
Bolivia Birding Expeditions was founded and is led by Hugo Santa Cruz, CEO of the company. He has worked as a birding guide for nearly ten years and as a naturalist guide for more than twenty years, collaborating with different national and international tour companies. Over the years, he has studied and explored birdlife across Latin America and has international bird guiding experience. He was also the organizer of the XIV South American Bird Fair, held in Bolivia in October 2025.
After many years of fieldwork, exploration, and bird monitoring across the country, he has traveled extensively throughout Bolivia and is among the people with the highest number of bird records in the country. In addition to guiding, he is also a wildlife photographer, with photographs published in books, magazines, and other specialized publications.
Bolivia Birding Expeditions offers birdwatching and wildlife tours ranging from half-day trips to 45-day expeditions. The company is based in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, but our operations extend throughout the entire country. We have the logistical and technical capacity to design custom tours tailored to the specific interests, target species, and time availability of each birdwatching group.
